A seminal moment in Beatle history in Seattle
August 21, 1964 -- “Beatlemania” in Seattle WA – a famous tune and memorable pictures!
In 1964, (45 years ago !) the Edgewater Hotel hosted the window fishing Beatles. On August 21, 1964 the Beatles gave their first concert in Washington State. Their venue . . . the Seattle Center Coliseum playing to 14,300 screaming fans. The Edgewater has since been given a complete renovation. Room 272 has been renamed The Beatles Suite. An evening in Room 272 currently runs about $1.050 per night. Geez, I wonder if they give AARP discounts to all the baby boomers that were loyal fans so many years ago.
The day before “Beatlemania” swept through Seattle, the local Woolworth’s store sold out every Beatles wig, “Bobble” head doll, trading card . . . their entire inventory of Beatle memorabilia.
On August 21 9:25 PM local disc jockey Pat O’Day introduced the Beatles -- and the crowd went wild. The Beatles played “All My Lovin”, “Twist and Shout”, “She Loves You”, I Wanna Hold You Hand; all their early hits. They were paid $34,569 for their Seattle performance! (45 years later Paul McCartney played five concerts in New York! I wonder what he was paid ?!)
The famed “fishing picture” was not staged. In 1964 their irreverent sense of humor was spontaneous – what better way to “kill some time” before the show!

Phil Medley and Bert Russell wrote the original “Twist and Shout.” When the song appeared on the Beatles first album (Please, Please Me) John played rhythm guitar and sang lead vocal, Ringo was on the drums, Paul played bass guitar, and George played lead guitar.
“Twist and Shout” from ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” – just as fun 40+ years later.
The Seattle Space Needle was built for the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair. At the center of the fair was the Seattle Coliseum which is still hosting “lesser” events today.

On a personal note, I was born to WONDERFUL parents that I loved dearly. I teased them many years after the 1964 concert that it was the one “disappointment” of my childhood. A girlfriend had tickets, one for me. However, my darling mom and dad were not about to let their only daughter attend such a raucous event.
