It broke my heart...

My mother-in-law passed away in July and I was to dispose of the hundreds of dollars worth of prescription drugs she was taking. There were pills for blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, dementia, diuretics, inhailers for asthma, etc., all needed to be disposed of safely.
It literally broke my heart to toss away drugs that could be of help to a poor person without insurance or the ability to afford them at any cost, however, the law states that drugs cannot be given to anyone other than the person they are prescribed for. There was even an unopened/factory sealed bottle of Janumet and inhailers still in the boxes.
I did what I thought to be safe and poured them into plastic bags filled with used dirty kitty litter from our cat's box. Hopefully, no one would be foolish enough to retreive them!

Isn't that a shame? When DH first got out of the hospital, he was taking 16 medications. In the four months that he's been home, we've worked our way down to 7. I have all of the unopened bottles in a cupboard. It makes me sick to throw them out when someone could make good use of them.

The true heartbreak is seeing things become difficult to acquire only after they have been mis-used and then legislated against to prevent people who could really benefit by their use from obtaining them. I believe that is one reason why folks move to other parts of the world to feel better.

You said it harbormaster. Here in the Philippines it is possible to buy many drugs that would require a script in the USA. Also, if the drugs have not expired you can return the unused portion to the pharmacist for your money back.

i just heard on the news that the police now take them as well. its an attempt to keep them out of the hands of kids. but im guessing they destroy them.

i know its totally illegal, but i have known of social groups and nursing homes that recycle the meds for poor clients. even some dr's. sometimes compassion has to outweigh the law.
