As I understand it, there is a script but they are waiting for the green light from Warners. Also heard that Ian Holm will not be playing Bilbo but basically all casting is still up in the air!

It won't be the same if new people are in the more familiar roles...even though there is many years difference in the time frame of the story
Actually i thought it was more or less a done deal...goes to show ya...we just have to wait and see, huh?

There is a Middle Earth stimulus package in place for the Hobbit and the What was Gandalf doing in the Mirkwood? after Bilbo returned to the Shire with certain gifts bridge story and movie.

$3 billion dollars worth.

So currently Bilbo, Gandalf et.al. are being held up for ransom as the claims from the LoTR is being yet, still settled and was Gollum actually just a badly dressed, sun shy, ethically challenged lawyer?, hmmm of course only JRR would know.

What we do know the film(s) will be made and they will be a success and live on as DVDs forever somewhere in the West.

And in six weeks or we can celebrate Bilbo's and Frodo's birthdays and then adventure begins again.
