Help stop pound seizure in Michigan animal shelters

Earlier this year, we notified concerned citizens like you about the inhumane practice of pound seizure occurring in Michigan and about a bill to stop the practice. Currently, Michigan law allows animal shelters to practice “pound seizure” -- providing animals for experimental research.

American Humane needs your help to put an end to this practice. House Bill 4663 -- “Koda’s Bill” -- was filed in March 2009. Koda, a 3-year-old malamute, was surrendered to the Gratiot County Animal Control shelter. Instead of being allowed the time to find a new home, Koda was taken by a Class B dealer and resold to the University of Michigan, where he received traumatic injuries as a subject for the university’s Advanced Trauma Life Support Class and then euthanized. Koda’s former family believed that taking him to a shelter would allow him another opportunity to find a home and did not know he would be used in a research experiment.

Michigan’s animal shelters have overwhelmingly rejected this practice. However, the only way to ensure an end to pound seizure is to pass Koda’s bill.

HB 4663 is pending before the House Agriculture Committee. Please ask the committee members to set this bill for a hearing and vote in support of its passage.
