Copyright Issues

I love the posts you guys are putting up here. You all rock my socks!

Can I please ask that when you copy something from the internet and paste it here, that you give us the link where you found it. That will help us avoid copyright issues. If it is something from your email (one of those things that has four hundred forwards on it before you get to the actual message LOL) that you let us know that email is where it came from.

It is illegal (and against Eons TOU) to just copy and paste something without attribution, and I don't want to have to be deleting any of this good stuff!.

So, keep 'em coming!

Thanks Marti. I got in trouble on EONS for confronting someone for plagarizing without acknowledgment. They passed stuff off as their own work. Isn't it funny that I'm the one who took the heat. I think it had more to do with my lack of diplomacy in handling the situation, but still unfair that the "perp" was allowed to skate....and repeat the offense again later. So, thank you for taking a stand on an issue that is important to me.

I am a real Nazi Manager on all my groups about this stuff. Plagarizing is just a nifty word for STEALING. LOL I don't know who gave you the hard time, LAGS, but if it was the manager or mods of the group, shame shame on them.

I know when it is done in innocence, and when it is done deliberately to be passed of as one's own thoughts. This post is simply a reminder for us all. Just say where you got it. That's all I am asking.

When you steal from one author it's plagiarism; if you steal from many, it's research. Wilson Mizer. Thanks for the reminder Marti.

Does this also apply when the quotation is by someone famous and lifted from a site that has compiled such quotations?

No. I am talking about paragraphs of text passed off as one's own thoughts. We get stuff in our emails and sometimes come across stuff on sites that catches our eye and we want to copy and paste it here. Just give a link as to where you found it, and if it came from your email, say so. But frankly, if it came from your email, it is probably 5 years old anyway, and we have probably all seen it at least 4 times before, so it's kind of a waste posting it in a group anyhow.

Several of us here are in groups where there are repeat offenders who cut and paste articles, blog entries, etc. and paste them in the groups and act as if this was their own words, and it happened in a couple of my groups the day I posted this sticky, so just wanted to spread the word.

Quotations are pretty much public domain. Anybody can quote you. And no one has a copyright on quotation collections. Quotations are defined as something fairly short and pithy. Not several paragraphs. And even then, while we do not usually cite the web address where we found the quotation, we DO say who the author of the quote is.

I have gathered a posie of other men’s flowers, and nothing but the thread that binds them is mine own.
