Internships for Boomers & Retirees

ABC news, in conjunction with JobsOver50.com, is putting together a segment on internships for 50+ job seekers. The topic will stress that people are going back to work, even for internships or similar type employment.

If you are interested in contributing to the story and appearing in the segment (Nightline or World News Tonight) please let me know. We greatly appreciate your interest.

Thank you,
Michele O'Connor

Thanks Michele Keep us posted on the outcome of this project to help inform the public about how much harder it is to gain new employment if you are 50 and older.

I am hearing about the problem from my age group everyday looking for work.

Internships are ok, I guess. They are good way for an employer to get experienced, sage workers for little to no pay.

By the time one has 30 or more years work experience under their belt, internships to learn a new trade or occupation aren't necessary for most for they have enough skills and experience to open their own business or consult.

I've had a few take runs at me with 'internship' programs, but choose to consult, instead. My pay rate ranges from $30 an hour to $100 an hour consulting vs. minimum wage to no wage at all (internship) the alternative.

If one thinks of just getting a paycheck from an employer, swap is so right, for one's value goes downhill quickly once they past 50. Even at 40, many employers would rather have a 20-something they can train the way they wish and hope the person will be there for 20 or more years and a gold watch.

One can look to make their own job, be their own employer after they have 20, 30 or more years of skills. And often make more money than any employer would pay them.

I agree GothamGal with your message. Some people, however, are not entrepreneurial and prefer structure instead of risk. In addition, we are seeing many 50+ go back to school to learn a new trade or sharpen an old one. During this time of weak employment these people may need to accept a low-paying skill-generating position (which we call a 50+ internship).
