newbie says hi

Well, my company finally went belly up. I'm out of work for the very first time in my life. While I know I'm in good company (9.5% unemployment rate as of this morning), it's still hard at my age to locate employment. I'm also finding it hard to find a job contact willing to even give me an interview. I guess I'll have to get creative, but I'm not sure how.

My local Unemployment office is less than helpful, and add to that the fact that I live in the butt crack of nowhere, that doesn't help.

Any advice from the other members is appreciated. My qualifications are "training, public speaking, project organization, and medical laboratory--although the last one I can't do anymore d/t a previous illness. I can, however, train/teach in this area w/o problem.

Sorry to hear about your job. It sucks! I was laid off in early January of this year and it took me 5 miserable months to finally find a job. I've only been back to work 5 weeks, had to take a considerable pay cut, and don't really love the job, but, I'm not complaining. I'm glad to be working again and to have benefits. Unemployment worked great for me, but I like working better. I never thought that age would make a difference....I thought experience and great work ehtics were enough....NOT! In 5 months I had 7 interviews and not once did I get even a second interview. Very depressing. I had never been out of work before in my life and have been an executive assistant forever.

I don't know a lot about you line of work, but my advice is to be as patient as you can and search every day, every web site in your area. Be sure and get your unemployment. I will be keeping good thoughts and prayers coming your way. Good luck!!

Keep us posted.

Try this web site: Rat Race Rebellion. I found several jobs -- work at home jobs. Depending on what you want to do, salaries vary.

Now call centers do not pay very well. But if you want to pick up some extra money, look at these work at home jobs. I worked for Cloud 10 and did some training for West at Home. I quit Cloud 10 (wish I had not now and went back to my last job I had and they put me on lay-off again on April 28, 2009).

I agree -- I would rather work. Thank goodness I have a husband who makes fairly good money but he will be retiring soon as his 66th birthday is in November 2009. He says he is staying on at his company. And I checked Social Security and he can get his check with no penalties as he has all his Social Security credits.

Good luck to all.

Good luck to you and everyone. I was off work for only about 9 weeks. I took a job that pays me $114 less a week, but I do like the job. The thing is, it is a machine shop that is hanging on by a thread. I just this month stopped paying the credit card companies. I racked up quite a amount of $$$ and just can't make the payments and I don't care anymore, not when chase is charging me 29.27% interest. I think it's funny and I'm laughing all the way to the bank. At least if I lose this job their will be less to worry about. By the way I have been in contact with a lawyer. Sorry, I got off on a tangent. Until next time...
