That is very interesting RSB . I have never read of any mass genocide of the Etrusci by the Romans and while there certainly were many new people who came to the area during the era of the Roman Empire ,you can't wipe out genetic traces of a race by mingling and interbreeding with it .
Dirck, your comment reminded me of the discovery that a guy in Cheddar, England was the descendant of a guy who died in a cave there 9,000 years ago. If pre-Iron Age people in England still have DNA floating around after 9,000 years, you would think the Etruscans would after 2,700 years.

As mentioned in the article, the Romans held the Etruscans very low esteem. It is believed that by the time of Julius Caesar, the Etruscan language was extinct and no one could read it. Though the Roman alphabet is derived from the Etruscan.
The Romans deposed their last king, and Etruscan in the 6th century BCE and created the Res Publica, vowing never to be ruled by kings again which 500 hundred years later proved fatal for Gaius Julius Caesar who claimed his family descended from the time before King Romulus.
The last king of Rome was the cause of a great deal of odium which added to the bad odor of the Etruscan reputation. Soon after Rome overran Eturia, enslaving most of the population and occupying their cities.
In the early days, Rome finally defeated a neighbouring city and killed the population, leaving the city empty. Rome in turn was sacked by the Gauls and the Romans fled to the empty city until the Gauls finally left Rome.

Perhaps a giant asteroid hit the earth and all of the Etruscans disappeared.
Hey, it worked when the dinosaurs made their getaway!

It's been said that, having switched over to using Latin, Etruscan-based upper class families in or after Cesar's time, eventually acquired high positions of power in Rome. And, then, also, when Italy was formed in the 19th century, the dialect used to represent the standardized Italian language was from Tuscany. Maybe, the revenge of the Etruscans?
