Every Saturday my Mom and I would go to downtown Chicago and go to the movie and stage show-then go out for lunch or a hot fudge sunday
Very nice Silver. That is a very nice memory indeed. For me it was going to the World`s Fair back in 1964 with my older brother and my Great uncle. The man I was named after. It was a long drive each way cause for some reason we did not stay over night. Another time was when he took my brother and I to Niagara Falls. He meant the world to me and when he died it hurt me bad because he was like a father to me.
My grandfather was my whole life! He convinced me that corned beef hash in the can was actually dog food! Everytime I went to visit him I requested dog food for lunch! Course I was really young couldn't read yet, but whatever he ate..I ate! When he died I lost my best friend and I still miss him!
My mother`s father was a strange one. He was shell shocked in the 1st World War and would go off at the drop of a hat sometimes. I did learn to walk by hanging on to his crutches the second time as I was severely punished for not going to the bathroom when I was told to by my parents.
Lucky, you,I never knew either one of mine....but it was my grandma that was the world to me,everyone called her "Maw".
But the thing I wanted to tell right now,is a lot Like Silver's.
We caught the streetcar behind our house in St.Louis, and road downtown every Saturday to shop and go to woolworth's where I always got a hamburger and fries!...drenched in kechup!
I remember woolsworth and I ate there often too!..Boy I really feel old now!
their food seemed soooo good!
Yes and it made me sick when they closed down for good! I loved eating their cause of the old time style of the place.
My favorite childhood memory is all of the friendly people - kids and adults.
This is not just a memory. Folks like all of you here keep me going.
Thanks!
your welcome,Gort....but it's the same with us...hoping to bring some of it back.
