I bet that night he went to bed more drunk then usual. ... I bet your right.
Flicka,
Children are taught sanitized history.... The good thing is that we do know about these atrocities.

I don't get it either. The only thing I have learned so far is to love the peace in my personal life.
Gort: I think it is a mistake to put the atomic bombings in their own category. Believe me, the wounds and horrors experienced by the people of Hamburg and Berlin and Tokyo and Yokohama were every bit at great as those at Nagasaki and Hiroshima.
More people were killed in one night of incendiary bombing of Tokyo than either Hiroshima or Nagasaki.
I have read the history and the revisionist history on the atomic bombings. It's easy to Monday morning quarterback, but given that Truman was new to the office and given the other factors involved, I still support the decision to drop. What I DON'T support is the short time frame between the two bombs: I think we owed Japan more time to absorb the lesson of Hiroshima.
Point is this: We were looking at an invasion of the Japanese Home Islands with an estimated U.S. casualty rate of one million: Four times all of our combined casualties from all previous battles against Japan and Germany. Furthermore, Japanese casualties were estimated to be horrendous.
Were the bombs and their destruction terrible? Yes. . .but not so terrible as the alternative as seen at the time.
I tend to agree with that. the bombs gave the Japanese an excuse to surrender. so does any application of overwhelming force which is why I disagree with the doctrine of proportionate response.
"I disagree with the doctrine of proportionate response. "
Me too.
I guess it depends on what country you read the history in.....I certainly knew the truth but was not raised here in the States. None the less, the information is all out there for anyone to see.
i still sauy get thee to a library the bombing of dresden, tokyo , the nuclar bomb dropped these were in my family something you better know about. it ws expected that we, My siblings,+ I would discuss this. My father would ask the question to kick it off. usually he would present it either as an ethical decision to make or pure history.
P.S civilians have been targets of war as part of strategy since biblical times william the conquorew on his invasion of england is reported to have killed all the occupants of the girst town he came to except three or four which he set free to spread the terror of this man so the next town would not put up opposition.
