I would think the bombing of pure civilian centers that do not have military signficance today would be considered a war crime.
All wars are obscene. WWII ushered in a new age of obscenity. It really took the gloves off so to speak. Maybe thats' a good thing. Perhaps living in an age of MAD the polys and generals will get their feet off their desks and start asking some relevant questions bucuz their ass is on the line too.
The bombing of Dresden was a shame on the allies. The war was almost over, Hitler was losing. It was just done to show our strength and to scare the Russians a little.
I knew very little about it until I started to teach Slaughterhouse-five. Then I did research. It was all about civilians. Yes, there was a train that the military used, but it was not a strategic city. It was a beautiful old gingerbread Bavarian city that looked like a fairy tale and the 100,000 to 150,000 deaths were mostly civilians. People were boiled alive as they jumped into ponds and water towers to avoid the fire storms. Horrible.
Why did I not know much about it? I knew about Nagasaki and Hiroshima,a but not Dresden.
WAR IS HELL and that is why we need to get out of Iraq and Afghanistan now.
War atrocity is what I would call it.
You are singing to the choir crest.
Yeah, but why was I not taught about it in high school along with the bombing of Japan? In some ways, I think Dresden was worse.
When the atrocities of others become the justification for one's own atrocities, all humanity loses.
There is no moral, ethical compass.
Hitler was the one who started it-his bombing of London-and his vengence
weapons like the buzzbomb and V2 rocket.
Nobody was bombing the civilian populace until he started.
Todays high tech weapons-you can put that bomb right where you need it-alot less colateral damage.
Young people in this country have been cheated out of knowledge by edited history books, aimed at making the USA out to be heros at all cost....even lies...
How is it any different than burning a village to the ground in the Vietnam war?
How different is it to the Romans building a ramp to the apex of Massada?
It's all the same. You can argue the subjective all you want.
Peter, paul, and Mary (jeez, I am getting old) asked "how many more will it take ... "
No different now, or then. All is fair in love and war
Best

WAR IS HELL, HAPPY 4TH OF JULY ALL.
