Charlie Wilson's war

watched this last night and really liked the bonus feature about the making of the movie which included the real Charlie Wilson and the rich Texas gal played by Julia roberts..oh yeah, the question..Why did the Red army invade Afghanistan to start with? I was up on the Pakistan/Afghanistan border before the invasion and got to know the people well enough to know that messing with them was not a good idea.

The Soviet war in Afghanistan (also known as the Soviet–Afghan War or the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan) was a nine-year conflict involving Soviet Union forces supporting the Marxist People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) government by their own request, against the mujahideen resistance. The latter group found support from a variety of sources including the United States, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and other Muslim nations in the context of the Cold War. This conflict was concurrent to the 1979 Iranian Revolution and the Iran–Iraq War.

The initial Soviet deployment of the 40th Army in Afghanistan began on December 24, 1979.[3] The final troop withdrawal began on May 15, 1988, and ended on February 15, 1989. Due to the interminable nature of the war, the conflict in Afghanistan has often been referred to as the Soviet equivalent of the United States' Vietnam War.

that war was a "proxi war for the U.S. Neith the USSR or the USt want to take on eacj other directly directly so each side whenever possible gets some other country or group to do the fighting here the russian army invaded so we automatically started giving weapons and advice to the mujadeen a proxi whar then happens is if the side we support happens to win now the USSR finds a group to sipport to take down the side we supported. although in this case they did not have to the afghanis just turned what they learned on us.
