Independence Day

I took this picture last Monday on my way to Ellis Island Museum--quite an evocative place it was. On this special day, I send up a prayer of gratitude for those souls who bravely ventured before us so that we can live freely in this great land, both the soldiers and the immigrants from whom we came. May you and yours enjoy the celebrations of our collective birthday today!

Thank you Stace. Isn't she awesome. It takes your breath away to see her up close.

it really was quite a moment for me..seeing her up close, even though I'm sure I must have seen her before in all those years of visiting NYC to see my grandparents...somehow it really hit me this time~

Does anyone know if they've done the refurbishments necessary to be able to climb into the crown? When I was there (1978) it was closed.

no, you can only climb up to the pedestal as of now from what I understand~

Even though I live fairly close, it's been years since I visited her. It's a great photo.

Just heard on the news that the crown was reopened today, the 4th, to the public. Part of the refurbishment was handrails. Basically they were addressing safety issues in case the statue had to be evacuated quickly.
