Independence Day

I took this last Monday on my way to visit Ellis Island Museum--quite an evocative place it was. On this Independence Day, I send up a prayer of gratitude to all who ventured before us so that we may live in this great land of ours. May you and yours enjoy the celebrations of America's birthday~

Can we ride the elevator all the way up to crown now? When I was there in 1978 it was closed. Bummer.

The crown has been reopened. There's an elevator to carry you to the top of the pedestal, but reaching the crown requires climbing 354 steps. Here's a picture of the spiral staircase inside.

Rocks, apparently the only people who ever go into the torch are maintenance personnel who make repairs and change the light bulbs that keep it illuminated at night. Looks pretty cramped!
