James cagney never said...YOU DIRTY RAT...
I lack the knowledge and vocabulary to clearly discuss the look of the movie- the cinematography(sp?) but I'll try anyway-lol!!
They did an excellent job of making it look true to the period and of looking old.It wasn't in black&white but it used muted tones. Lots of black, brown, grey, white, etc.

Impressions-
Sometimes it reminded me of live films/reels and sometimes of a film of a play.
Sometimes they used a hand held or at least a wobbly camera (not to excess like the Blair Witch movie)- It came near giving me a motion sickness feel a couple of times.
Sometimes the outside filming reminded me of outside "soaps" filming.

Questions
The gunfire sound and red flashes of the gun? Is this the way the guns sounded and looked at that time in history? Was this their way of making it authentic?
The music was perfect-IMO.
"Am I Blue"
The casting was perfect- especially Johnny Depp.
Like Butch & Sundance- I wanted John Dillinger to get away- I really liked him.
I did know a bit of the story but not a great deal.
The cast

Setting-Depression Era
Sorry I was reffering to the movie made in 1931...with James Cagney...
It was interesting in many ways
Police/FBI- some I liked & respected some I disliked.
Outlaws-some I liked&respected and some I disliked.
Interesting points-
Technology changing the life/career of outlaws
The use of the cinema newsreels and movies inside of a movie.
Racism of the time
FBI- getting funding from Legislators.
Interstate commerce/laws/crimes
...did they still use the lady in red????
