Yuck! A scorpion!

I was just outside digging in the dirt up above my deck and I saw a scorpion!!! Eeeeeeeeek. I'm glad I was just about done with what I was doing because that made me NOT want to work in that area any more!

Who knows about scorpions??? Eeeeeeeeeek!

And there you have it. Veggie, I've been a surveyor for thirty years and I know two people who were bitten by rattlesnakes, and guess what? They were both trying to pick them up. Duh!

Why do people do dumb things? Why did Steve Orvine (was it Irwin?) swim above a sting ray knowing their primary form of defense is an upward stab of their tail? Why do tourists get eaten by crocodiles? Why do people get bitten by poisonious arachnids or adders? I know we can't protect ourselves from everything but we can with a modicum of common sense prevent such disasters simply by applying the rule of distance times 2 = safety.

I also thought scorpios preferred dry and deserts. The only place I ever saw scorpios, tarantulas or roaches the size of a bus was when I lived in Kingsville, Texas, in the desert 40 miles below Corpus Christi.

The last time I saw one was when I was taking my English final at Kingsville HS. I was wearing sandals, looked down and a small scorpio had strutted under my chair, just past my foot. Another student, Alejandro, picked the scorpio up on a sheet of paper and released it outside.

Scorpions are commonly thought of as desert animals, but in fact, they occur in many other habitats, including grasslands and savannahs, deciduous forests, montane pine forests, intertidal zones, rain forest and caves. Scorpions have even been found under snow-covered rocks at elevations of over 12,000 feet in the Himalayas of Asia.

Shocked, Veggie ask: "Why in the WORLD would you try to pick up a rattlesnake?"

Let's not forget snake handlers who want to prove their faith in God. I guess it's: If I pick up the rattlesnake and it doesn't bite me, I have faith and/or God loves me?

In olden days, didn't "they" decide whether or not you were a witch by whether you drowned or floated? In this group, someone knows the specifics on that one.

I try not to think about all the insects and arachnids hiding about, including the possibilities of scorpios under ice. I prefer denial.

I'm not often in areas with snakes but we do have a large bat and rodent population in the neighborhood. Last night I saw a possum walking down the middle of the street.
