I don't remember too much. When I was around 1st or 2nd grade dad bought me some fireworks. Mom and dad took me out to set them off. I was a bit scared. Either that year or the next I was setting off snakes and burned my thumbnail off (only a bit). That was my last year to get fireworks. I think we also moved.
We went to Fort Vancouver one year, but by then I was in college.
Now: I worry about fires getting started with home fireworks. It is pretty dry where we live. I also hate it when they set them off near parked cars that are waiting for the big displays. Guess more concern about safety is the issue now.
I remember the big fireworks displays at Columbia Park (Tri-Cities, WA) and the fun of 'writing' my name with sparklers. Now, I'm just glad to be in the good old USA to celebrate our independence (I've been in Europe for the past two July 4th). I haven't bought any 'fireworks' for personal use for many years, as I've worried about starting a fire, but seeing the big shows in the Tri-Cities and Spokane has been great.
I was in the 4th grade & my Dad was a Deputy Sheriff for Navajo County AZ. He was assisting with the county fireworks display so I got to watch part of the set up but they impressed upon my young psyche how dangerous they are. I have never cared much for fireworks except to watch the big displays from afar. When my children were growing up I especially hated it because my husband always insisted on buying fireworks and letting the kids help him set them off. I was always afraid one of them would get hurt.
I remember sparklers and cherry bombs and lots and lots of fireworks. And we did clam bakes at the town square. There was a gazebo for the band. There would be a small parade.
What would make it better today- more jobs for more people. More reason to celebrate and less worry about these times.
Will be at the Blues Festival and the fireworks tonight.
I'm in agreement with miss titch. I've never been fond of light yourself fireworks. I'm just a natural born worrier when it comes to my kids and getting hurt.
When I was a kid the thing that stands out in my memories are the parades we went to as kids. Candy was thrown from the firetrucks. and of course big snickers from us kids if a horse went poo poo:}} I'm not sure why that was humorous...I wouldn't change anything now...I get goose bumps every time I see a sky lit up with fireworks..
