What a BookShould Be

Dark humor, play on words, metaphors, language.

The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver.

A truly talented writer will drain me as I read, one of the reasons I don't read fiction often. A relative recommended the book and forwarded me passages. When I read the following, I too was "hit in the solar plexus" I can't get past the emotive visual of the following to actually read the book.

As long as I kept moving, my grief streamed out behind me like a swimmer’s long hair in water. I knew the weight was there but it didn’t touch me. Only when I stopped did the slick, dark stuff of it come floating around my face, catching my arms and throat till I began to drown. So I just didn’t stop.

This passage is the antithesis of an axe for the frozen sea within--It seized my breath and I haven't let go since.

The Good Soldier Švejk by Jaroslav Hašek. I read the book after I saw some episodes of it on tv. Very entertaining for anyone who understands the history of that time - I'm not an expert.
