Independence Day

How did you all celebrate the 4th growing up?

Media, the town a mile from us outside Philadelphia, had a big parade every 4th of July. At least, we thought it was big.

Between three houses: our house and the houses on either side, there were 17 children. The younger kids marched in the parade every year.

Politically, my parents were conservative Republicans and my neighbors were very liberal Democrats. But differences didn’t spill onto the kids.

One year we dressed as signers of the Declaration of Independence in white shirts and black peddle pushers, hair tied back. Another year we did the Spirit of '76. I limped barefoot and played Yankee Doodle on a flute.

In 1959, we did a special float—somebody’s red Radio Flyer wagon with a poster on it—to celebrate Hawaii's and Alaska's statehood.

After the parade there were competitions at Media HS field—everything from running to pie eating. I ran fast although never fast enough to win.

At night the whole family went to a park in Media, spread out blankets and watched fireworks.

That's sounds great! Alas, our family was different. Working class, about every other year we'd go to the beach for a few days, both my folks had blue-collar jobs, and usually had the week of the fourth off. On the alternate years, my mother used us as slave labor, to wash windows, wax the floors (you know those old hard woods, with Bowling Alley Wax). You name it, we cleaned it!

Yeah, that's more the life my son and I led, around when I could get off work.

We used to live uptown, and the city fireworks went off at the High School stadium right behind my house, when my kids were small. We could just go outside and watch! Was great! No matter what the activities, I alsways stop and remember the sacrifice of those that gave us independence and try to protect it. Tomorrow, we'll probably grill some burgers and dogs.

HAE, I too grew up in PA, in Lancaster Co, and then Kennett Square. I don't remember too much of what we did for the 4th in Lancaster but in KS we lived in this huge house with lots of ground with it. We would have the neighbors over for a big cookout and then we'd all go to the field behind the HS to watch the fireworks. The HS sat on this big hill and you could see the fireworks for miles around.
I've also lived in two towns that were on rivers and they would set the fireworks off from barges in the middle of the river....way cool!

We blew loads of firecrackers up, all day long, and then watched the professional show in town and then would walk over to the local dairy aisle for a big Braums Chocolate Icecream. Mmmmmmm. And then the next day I would blow things up some more and I just love the smell of sulphur and smoke!

We lit sparklers in the back yard...

Later my HS sweetie and I went to some real fireworks in her neighborhood. Now gone.

Later still. DC and the mall. Several different experiences there. I'll share if you like via PM. I'm getting a bit tired. I'll be on for a while though.

My brother and I, and any cousins that might be around, would get fireworks! We loved to shot off firecrackers, sparklers, roman candles, etc! Other than that, I don't remember what else what exciting about it! LOL!

Tennessee- We'd grill food, eat at our picnic table, iced watermelon, homemade ice cream, maybe have some water-gun fun( until someone would grab the garden hose), maybe some music, cap off the day with fireworks.

What will I do tomorrow? ditto above

LOL!!! Some things never change.
