Children with Down often have complications with their hearts and digestive tracks. She could be taking time out to tend him while he has heart surgery.
Personally, I think it is because she realized that she is becoming strident and shrill, jumping at 'shadows' and making herself look like a jerk. The stress is getting to her and her family and she wants out of the lamplight. Plus, now that she is a 'national' figure, investigations about costing the state millions. She might mean it when she says she doesn't want to cost the state those much needed dollars. If she stayed in office but declared herself off the electoral radar for future offices, the investigations would continue anyway. This way, they will probably stop because there is no political hay to be made when the horse has returned to the barn.

I'm sitting here watching the Palin press conference and strangely feeling sad for her. It was like watching Humphrey Bogart in the court martial scene of the Cain Mutiny movie. who ever writes her speeches should be fired.

She clearly was not prepared.
She was unsure, her explanations muddled.
Apparently she didn't discuss this decision with too many people.
NPR is reporting that even the Lt. Gov. was caught completely by surprise.
Wonder wants next.
