Poney Express Trails

April 3 1860. Pony Express riders went into action.
Wanted young skinny fellers over 18, Expert riders and willing to take death risks, Orphans preferred. Hazards like bandits, Indians , weather and terrain.
Lasted 18 months, One went over 322 miles with out stopping. Another ran 24 miles straight with one horse. It paid $100.00 month.
I have stood in the middle of their trail and visualized what it must have been like. The area was so desolate , I can only imagination what it was like then Rugged dry, arid and horse at a full gallop leaving nothing but a dust trail. Them had to be some tough young boys.

I've often wondered what it would have been like living during that time.

Yes, gate that group didn't last very long but man were they something! Makes you want to jump up and try that. The Kevin Costner movie, The Postman, brought some of those thoughts back to me when I watched that movie the other night.
