Are cordless mouses any good?

I am thinking about getting a cordless mouse. Are they more user friendly then regular mouse. Also can you change the speed of a mouse so when you click on something it goes right to it. In answer to some pass replies I do have DSL and Windows XP.
Thanks again.

Yes a cordless mouse good because it is not cabled to the machine. It can be finicky when trying to detect the sender or when resetting the mouse so that it is recognized by the sender.

If these minor issues are a problem for you then remain with the corded mouse.

I have one, and a cordless keyboard as well, but there is an eye that is plugged into the CPU, so it is not exactly cordless. And I find I cannot get the mouse too far away from the eye, or it loses contact and the cursor disappears off the screen.

But I like it better than a corded mouse.

I'm not sure what you mean about the speed of the mouse and clicking takes you right to something. That speed would have to do with the processing speed of your computer, and if it is an internet site you are clicking on, on the speed of your internet and the workings of your browser.

I've used the cordless keyboard and mouse (combo so they share the same USB sender) for a few years now. I love them. They use up batteries quite frequently if you're at the computer as much as I am, so I used to lift the battery out at night so it wouldn't be "on". Now, though I have a Logitech (actually only brand I would use) and it has a button on the bottom that lets you turn it off at night. I also have a battery charger and use rechargeable batteries in all my electronics. I don't like Microsoft mice, of course, I only own one, but its reception is terrible. I bought it for my laptop but found you had to have the mouse directly in line with the USB sender and could be no farther than about 3 feet from it or it would not receive the signal. It cost more than Logitech so I keep it as a spare.

Denny, I forgot to add, that, at least with Logitech brand, you have a program called "Setpoint" and it allows you to set the speed of the mouse, etc.

Cordless mice are fine, but...
If you are a gamer you want a wired mouse. Serious gamers use wired mice and keyboards because a wireless device has a delay. It is a very small delay and for ordinary work you would never notice it. But in the world of gamers milliseconds matter.

You want to place the USB sender near the mouse. This is especially true if you live in an apartment building or near a radio station. At one time I had trouble at certain times of the day and it was a local station changing its antenna pattern. A lot of WiFi in the building can also cause trouble. Thats why you need it nearby. If you are in your own house and away from neighbors you can probably put the USB sender further away.

I recommend the Logitech M1100 for wireless and the G9 for wired.
I change mice at the very least once a year. I had the beginnings of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Changing mice makes my hand and wrist work at a different angle.
It works for me.

I got what I think is about the best cordless mouse ever. When I bought the Dell Studio laptop, I knew that I would want a wireless mouse and I wasn't sure if it was going to be bluetooth wireless or USB wireless. (Yeah, I sprung for the $20 to have the laptop B'tooth enabled when I bough it).

So, being one who likes to stick it to MSoft just to say I can, I tried using my bluetooth APPLE Mighty Mouse and see if I could pair it up with the Dell. Sacrilege! Well, I got it to work - once. Then, I just couldn't get the connection to become stable, so I gave up. But for one evening, I was running Windows using a wireless Apple mouse! :) (How's that, gg!)

Armed with the need to get a USB wireless (I just can't get cozy with a trackpad - too old fashioned I guess), I bought a Logitech V450 Cordless Laser mouse at Staples for about $40, and what a wonder it is!. Accurate, fast, reliable and precise. And it tracks beautifully on the fabric of the arm of my sofa! The USB nub is small and unobtrusive and I keep it permanently in one of the 4 USB ports on the Dell.

Cath - I'm sure it's not as fast as a gaming mouse, but it's just fine for travel use and business stuff like Excel and Word. No lag at all.

good job Pete :)

My experience with the wireless mouse ( and KBD ) that came with the Sony desktop all-in-one that I have was not good - it ate batteries for lunch ( and breakfast and dinner ) so I reverted to an old IBM small and loud board ( great old honkin' thing, hit it with a hammer and it just shrugs ) and Logitech mouse both into one USB connection - talk about a bastardized setup!

btw, isn't the plural of mouse ... "mice" ( or is it meece? meeses? )

( OFF TOPIC: OMG, SARAH RESIGNED! )

Logitech mice and keyboard's are about as good as you can get . Some time you can get a mouse and keyboard combo about the same price of a mouse alone . Best mouse i ever had was the
MX1000 . Wore it slap out then they quit making it . Seems the MX1100 is a good mouse also . Ebay is a good place to find one at a cheaper price . NewEgg also is good . First thing i look for in any mouse is whether it had a foreword back button . Saves a lot of time moving the mouse around . Right now I'm using a wireless keyboard and a MX518 gaming wired mouse . May buy another wireless mouse soon . Microsoft may have some good mice . but i never have used one .

MSoft makes good wireless mice, but their USB dongles (the part that actually plugs into the computer) have sometimes been as big as the mouse they're controlling. You can't use something like that on a computer meant to be portable. There's just too much "stuff" hanging around.
