on this day

I thouht it would be disrespectful not to mention that on this date the battle of gettysburg ended with a union victory. After an incredible artillary bombardment by the confederates on cemetary ridge followed by "Pickett's charge" the consederate loss put needing to cross the river never again to be in a position to invade the north. the story of this great battle is that it started over shoes. that the confederate cavalry went into gettysburg to get shoes for its solders when it ran into a regiment of union soldirs from there the battle took off. I once read a book about abut the people of gettysburg who were caught in their homes as the battle went from day to day. (I think the name was the color of courage.?) have a great holiday

I never heard the shoe story. I've been on the battle grounds of Gettysburg along with 5-6 others here in VA. I was a young teenage at the time. !3 years old. I believe the love of history brought me to the others. On 5 Forks near Richmond,va a few months ago. Jay

The Rebels were quit a sight. Ragged cloths, Dusty and dirty, Banishing guns shooting, cursing, stealing every thing in sight. 1863 I believe.

One civilian, a young woman, was killed by a stray bullet during the battle.
