Iphone
Jennifer got the new one - and gave me her old one - but it's not very old.it's 3g whatever that means - now I have to figure out the app stuff! - it's not easy! The hardest part is trying to write something! I think I'm touching an m or something else and another letter pops up instead does everyone who has an iphone have very thin pointed fingers? (with no nails)...I even see people thumbing away and not making mistakes - one thing for sure no matter where I am, my e-mail follows me!

Now you don't have to count on that wireless card with your notebook to communicate with the world. The typing is tricky until you learn what part of your fingertip is actually touching the key. For me, it's the right side of my fingertip so I jab a bit to the left. And the more you type on it, the better the auto-correct feature works.
As for the apps, just go to the App Store button on your phone and search for something, or check out the top downloads, or maybe look at the free apps. I downloaded Lose It which is a weight loss app. It's helped me lose 7 pounds! Yipeeeee! Only about 1000 pounds more to go. LOL!
Download a news app like CNN or USAToday or AP. Get the weather app from weather.com. A dictionary is nice. And there's a wikipedia. SportsTap for sports scores and highlights; especially handy during football season. And I could go on all afternoon. If you don't like an app you downloaded, just press and hold on the icon. When the icon starts to jiggle, press on the X in the upper corner. That will delete the app from your phone. To stop the jiggle, press on the home button.
And most importantly, don't forget to sync your phone with iTunes on your notebook. If you haven't already gotten the 3.0 software update, you can do that through iTunes.
If your daughter has already downloaded and installed apps on the phone, you may lose them when you sync. But sooner or later, you'll want to sync if for no other reason than to back up your phone.
Have fun!
Thanks a million - I'm going to do that! (about the apps) - every now and then I do something that makes all the apps shiver and I don't know why - or how to stop it - except to just close everything and start over - and that stops it! I'm anxious to see how it will work at home, but when Jennifer is there she can use it and so can Priscilla - (I even took a picture with it - of Jennifer with her 5 dogs (three are rescue dogs) plus two that Jori (my granddaughter) left with us for the weekend while she is having fun! It's just amazing! thanks again! Jane
My ignorance of how iPhones work is total. I had a cell phone about 7 years ago and found it was a very expensive thing that I really had no use for through AT&T and it was a major rip off. It cost a bundle to cancel the account and I really so reason to pay for something that was not needed for anything.
From what I can gather, that if one has an iPhone you have to have an AT&T account and once burned by those crooks, more than twice shy. Do they still charge you if you receive an incoming call? Are the monthly fees still outrageously high if you make one or two calls over your limit? I don't even know how they connect for your email.
Very curious as to what the all the hoopla is about.
@janefrancis: the shiver (jiggle) happens when you hold down on the icon. The red x in a circle appears at the top left corner of the icon. Press that x and you delete the app. You did the right thing to press the home button to get out of the shiver.
@Ghostdancer: First, the iPhone is not just a cell phone. It's like a miniature computer that you can carry around with you. Yes, it's through AT&T only (for now) but I've seen comparisons of carrier plans and the iPhone plans are no more expensive than others. Ours is the original basic plan which includes 550 shared minutes a month (which we've never gone over), rollover minutes, free nights and weekends, free mobile-to-mobile, national roaming, 200 text messages a month, and - are you ready for this? - unlimited data! That means I can check my mail, surf the internet, download and upload as much as I want. Now how much would you pay for all this? $200? $150? No, just $120 a month including all taxes. And that's not all! That's for two iPhones! Yes! Two iPhones! (RIP, Billy Mays) When I buy my new iPhone 3GS later this summer, my plan cost will go up $15 per month, that's $10 on the data and $5 for the text messages. As for email, you set up your accounts on the phone yourself. I have my home email and my .mac mail accounts on my phone.
I guess what I really love about the phone is that it's synced with my calendars, has all my contacts in it, and with the apps I have I'm never at a loss for the information I need when I'm out. I don't leave home without it. Ever.
And I can check Eons when I'm on the road. LOL!
If you want most of the features of an iPhone, without the monthly dole to AT&T, you might do as I did and opt for the iPod Touch. Without the phone, you won't have the luxury of wireless data connections over the cell phone circuits, but in many urban areas free wi-fi is widely available. I frequently lunch in a city park where I enjoy keeping up with my peeps on Twitter. In places where wi-fi is not available, I have plenty of downloaded literature (including the Bible and the complete works of Shakespeare) to enjoy. Nice to have a pocketable computer with so much to offer, even when you don't have Internet access.

I love my iphone! but I'm very cautious with AT&T. They NEVER get a bill right, but I've learned to hang in there and fight them! I got a bill on Monday for over $347.00 (I was expecting no more than 80 something. Yes - they made a mistake (a big one) and I did get credit for everything and got the corrected bill - but I don't trust them. My data card was a disaster - since the minutes they "said" I used and what I actually used did not jibe, but I got that fixed, too and ditched the data card - if my iphone is more than they quoted me - I'm going to have a fit - i have the 450 minute plan for calls *and I never go over that) and unlimited internet etc. so it should not be over 120.00 for all of it - and if it works, it will be great!..so far, I love it!.......but I don't like AT&T!!
I have the same one you have and I felt the same way when I was typing. That was a few months ago and now I look like one of the teenagers breezing through my email and texting. It just takes some getting used to. I also agree with you about AT&T. We added a phone line for my son and it's been 3 months with mistakes on the bills. Yes, they do correct the mistakes, but feel as if I have to brace myself for the next bill.
Glad you are enjoying the iphone.
I agree with Techie44. Don't know how I lived without my iPhone. Try using landscape mode (sideways) to get used to keyboard. I spend lots of time in remote areas without Internet access & 3G has been a lifesaver. Tons of available apps make for fun exploring & are hugely useful. Syncing calendars & contacts keep me organized. Get someone to advise you the first time you sync so that you don't inadvertently loose something. After first time, no. Problem. Have fun & enjoy!
Thanks for all of the information.
1. So far there is nothing offered that I really need or want
2. My suspicions of AT&T are re-enforced. I remember Ma Bell before the break up. The AT&T of today is a completely different animal--another example of rampant amoral capitalist greed.
3. My distaste for telephones grows with each passing year.
Instant communication is the marvel of the times, but we have lost something--the means to communicate meaningfully through the written word. Today tweeting and texting have made shorthand of language the is superficial and shallow at best.
Ghostdancer! You are too young to be so cynical! Tweeting and texting are - for sure- creating a shorthand of language - but it also adds a dimension to communication not possible in the past - sometimes a short tweet is all that's needed to affirm a contact! It's fun being in contact with grandkids - and their friends - and being involved in lives - even for a second - not possible in ordinary telephone conversations! I hope my phone works as well when I go back to Mississippi as it does here! The camera on it is wonderful - I took some great pictures with it while crossing the marsh - and it was sooooo easy! I'll see if I can post one!
