Syfy? So what?

Building on 16 years of water-cooler programming and soaring ratings growth following its most-watched year ever, SCI FI Channel is evolving into Syfy, beginning this summer, Dave Howe, president, SCI FI, has announced.

By changing the name to Syfy, which remains phonetically identical, the new brand broadens perceptions and embraces a wider range of current and future imagination-based entertainment beyond just the traditional sci-fi genre, including fantasy, supernatural, paranormal, reality, mystery, action and adventure. It also positions the brand for future growth by creating an ownable trademark that can travel easily with consumers across new media and nonlinear digital platforms, new international channels and extend into new business ventures.

"Imagine Greater" will become the new brand message and tagline.
"Without abandoning our legacy or our core audience, we needed to cultivate a distinct point of view with a name that we could own that invites more people in and recognizes our broader range of programming with literally something for everyone," Howe said in a statement. "Syfy allows us to build on our 16-year heritage of success with a new brand built on the power that fuels our genre: the imagination. Syfy ushers in a new era of unlimited imagination, exceptional experiences and greater entertainment that paves the way for us to truly become a global lifestyle brand."

Syfy—unlike the generic entertainment category "sci-fi"—firmly establishes a uniquely ownable trademark that is portable across all nonlinear digital platforms and beyond, from Hulu to iTunes. Syfy also creates an umbrella brand name that can extend into new adjacent businesses under the Syfy Ventures banner, including Syfy Games, Syfy Films and Syfy Kids.

The new brand evolution will launch in July, in tandem with the premiere of the new scripted drama Warehouse 13 on air.

-- from SciFi Wire, which will not change its name because of this.

The whole thing sounds lame to me. And it sounds like it could provide an excuse for the channel to dilute its programming with more "diverse" content like wrestling and dumb reality shows. What do you think?

Being totally honest, it is a bunch of crap! I wonder what Isaac Asimov would say to all this. He helped launch the channel back in the 80s. I am happy to note that SciFi Wire is not changing its name!

Believe me I have made as much fun as possible about their brand, but everything that I can recall about trademarking and values, Sci-Fi Channel was very marketable and could be owned. But then what do I know. Outside that this new name starts on July 7th.

I can only hope that they finally drop the WWE or what ever the name of the acting is.

"including fantasy", that I believe means that they will keep the WWF or WWE or WTF. So sad, because "Imagine Greater" will become the new brand message and tagline, does that mean we can imagine that the fakey BS will disappear? Wow it only takes me an hour to get home....

If they're having their best year ever, why do they keep changing things? Reminds me of a certain website that's always looking for new ways to fix what isn't broken...

Syfy: Yep it is lame. I wonder how long it will last. How much would any of you like to bet that, "SciFi" will return? :-) LoL

I will give the new name at least 18 months.
