how wars end

Jay Winik one of the greatest historians said this, "that how a war ends is just as important as the figting in the war. emotuinal it resonated with me. then i thouht about the wars of my lifetime basically the viet nam war & the iraq kuwait and thinking about how those wars ended the quote became meaningless. we lost in virtnam, left, refugees came to america, we ditched some others were recognized. treated the vetslike garbage and at least ith the viet nam i felt the country just wanted to move on and attempt to forget about it ( but it stayed alive) the kuwait war we helped clean up the environmental mess but nothing happened. so i will disagree with winik what do you all think?

WW2's ending kept us from WW3. And, until we find a weapon more fiercesome than the 'bomb", there won't be another major war. To put everything into perspective, we lost more soldiers on D-Day than we have lost in seven years since we got involved in Iraq and Afghanistan. That's something, at least.

There is an expression known as " winning the peace" . That means that at the end of the war , the terms of the armistice are favorable to the victors , but not so unfavorable to the losers that they sow the seeds of a future war .Our leadership has been so consistently inept in recent times that we are led into wars for no good reason , the military is handcuffed by the politicians with conditions that don't allow us to win , then we pull out after a number of years, having accomplished nothing other than wasting huge amounts of money , getting some of our people and lots of the other people killed , and making lots of money for the military industrial complex , and lately , the oil producers .

I agree with the previous reply in my view of history world war I just morphed into 2 with ten years to rearm there was no real peace.
I cannot figure out the Viet Nam war I know how it ended but cannot evaluate it. (except that we screwed up right from the beginning with Diem, the tonkin)
