Camping Fun

I just got home from camping down on the Kenai Peninsula here in my home state of Alaska. Yes, I pitched my new tent for the practice of it, but slept in a cabin of sorts that a friend has down on Funny River, south of Soldotna. We canoed on Brown's Lake, grilled steaks one night, and had king crab the other, enjoyed a hot tub, played some cribbage for $5 a game (and broke even there...whew) and the fire pit was available for s'mores.

I had to enjoy my 4th early because I'll be working this weekend. What are your plans for the 4th?

I plan to try to camp at Denali the end of the month...but they won't accept solo reservations, so I'll just go and hope for the best. I also got my application in for the 2009 Denali Road Lottery for September.

And last but not least....guess who bought a 2-man inflatable raft to enjoy some of the many lakes I live near?

Life is good.....

Hi,

I have never been to Alaska and it is one of the places I would love to come visit. I'm not a camper. I haven't camped since I was 18 and wouldn't know the first thing to do camping. I would need to be with a guide. But can you suggest an itinerary for a first time visitor to your state.

For scenic splendor if you don't need to economize, I would take a cruise ship to Alaska, then take the Alaska Railroad up to Fairbanks and then fly home from there.

For flying in, you'll land at the Anchorage Airport, and then within hours you can get to all but the most remotest parts of the state (the Bush).

If you drive in, you'll either be on the AlCan Highway through Canada, or you can drive to Vancouver/Seattle and book passage for your vehicle and yourself up the Inland Waterway on the Alaska state ferry.... the working person's version of a cruise.

The ferry saves your vehicle from rough roads, allows for either camping on the top deck (awesome) or cabin sleeping, and you get to enjoy all the beauty a cruise ship passenger for a small portion of the price, albeit without all the buffets, etc.

There's more than you can see up here in a lifetime. You'd need to tailor your plans to your interests, budget and timeline. One thing ALL eons members should know......if you travel to Alaska and pass through Wasilla, you're welcome for a meal and a visit with me!!! I might even offer the spare bedroom and shower/laundry facilities, but the visit and meal goes for everyone.

(Here's hoping a thousand people don't descend on me all at once!!!_

Welcome back HB...so glad to hear that you had a good time on your "camping" trip. Ha! It sounds like it was probably a fun, relaxing time.

I have no super big plans for the holiday. Was hoping my bosses would tell me to take tomorrow off, but alas....I have to come in for a 1/2 day. But, I shouldn't complain, they're great to me & at least I'm getting a 1/2 day off!

Saturday a friend of mine is have a group of us (about 14 people) over to her house. We'll cookout then play games - we always have a blast. I'm taking my homemade, super simple, world famous strawberry ice cream for dessert. It's going to be blazing hot here, so I'm sure we'll be in as much as we can.

My plans for July 4th weekend? For one thing, I'm NOT working tomorrow but my son is going to Alaska, yes HB, on an excursion trip with Backroads so I've to get up early in the morning to drive him to the airport. He is going for kayaking, biking and hiking for 11 days! Isn't that awesome! But it's a very long trip from Florida :(
I'm going to go to the gym, relax, read a book and I might go to the movies. So is going to be a cool weekend!
Happy Fourth to everyone!
P.D I'll also be on EONS :)

My plans for the 4th are:
I'll be in the same place at the same time (very early tomorrow morning) I was on July 4, 2008. I'll be running in the "RUN WILD 5K" here in Houston. This 100+ degree weather is for the birds when we're running! Then we'll stick around for the post-race party.

I posted photos from last year's race in the photo section.

HB, now that sounds like my idea of a great camping trip; set up the tent and sleep inside. :) It sounds like you had a fantastic time. And S' mores? Yummy!!! And King crab, OMG! my fave...

I will be playing chicken foot with Shelby and doing karaoke at a friend's house while eating much food and indulging in cool beverage...
