just a cool civil war story

I posted thus in another group then realized that some flk here might enjoy it. Here is a true story of a quick battle in the civil war that became legendary and is totaly true.
During Grant's plan to take Vicksburg he sent a colonol Abner Streight with 1,400 men 12 pieces of light artillery into the field. On the second day they ran into Bedford Forrest's cavalry of just 400 hungry men with 2 light pieces of artillery. As they faced off Forrest under a flag of truce rode up to streight requesting him to surrender to the stronger force. Streight's reply was that which ever side was truly stronger the other side would surrender.
Forrest had his 2 artilery pieces ridden around in circles on a cutout that was visible from the field, He also had his men stay in the woods but ride back and forth sounding as if a large regiment was coming. Streight getting nervous asks just how "many pieces of artillery do you have?" I have already counted moe then 15. Forrest replied those were the ones able to keep up, the rest will soon arrive. So Stright ordered all his men to surrender lay down their arms. As forrests 400 cavary came forward streight yells you cheated let us have our arms back. Bedford Forrest pats him on the shoulder and says, " Colonal all is fair in love and war"

No one would have to tell me to lay down my gun. I would refuse to pick one up.

another thing about the streigt's 1,400 cavalry guys they were riding on mules anothe idea. the thought was they were stronger and required less forage. I am only 50% sure but this bedford forrest was one of the founders of the KKK.

Yichel you are close , but not correct . Colonel Streight's raid had nothing to do with Vicksburg . Streight was sent on a raid across northern Alabama to cut the railroad that was supplying Braxton Bragg's Army of Tennessee in central Tennesee . Forrest chased Streight across the entire state of Alabama , fighting 7 battles with Streight's rear gua.rd. An Alabama teenager who is regarded as a state heroine , Emma Samson , from near Gadsden rode with Forrest's men to show them another ford on the river ( Coosa, I believe )where they could cross because Streight's rear guard was holding the bridge .Streight surrendered at Cedar Bluff , Alabama . Forrest was probably the best fighting general in either army in the Civil War and was one hell of an impressive man . After Hood destroyed the Army of Tennesse at Franklin with his suicidal charge , Forrest walked into Hood's tent , slapped him in the face, and shouted at him " God Damn you to Hell ! You are a butcher unfit to lead troops in combat , and if you were a whole man , i would beat you to death right here " . Hood had lost one arm and one leg at Gettsburg , thus the " whole man " reference .
