Thanks CookingLady that is what I thought
I applied one month before my 62nd birthday. I started collecting the month after. I have it made, but only because I have my marvelous family, especially my remarkable son, to make room for me. If I had to pay rent or a mortgage and keep the lights on, I'd be in trouble. My son doesn't charge me a penny for living here, I have my own "apartment" downstairs, and he pays the utilities. I told him I want to pay at least one of the utilities, just to feel I'm contributing, but so far, he hasn't agreed to it. So my money is pretty much mine to use as I see fit. I, too, do not have insurance, but after the first of the year, I'm going to break down and shell out some hard cash for a health care policy. It's only for another year and a half, and then I can apply for Medicare (or whatever the system is by then). My health has been pretty good so far, and my meds are reasonable, at Wal-Mart. But I'm playing with fire, not having insurance, and I know it. So, that's the first order of business after January. Well.......the second. First, I need a new computer; mine's slower than molasses going uphill in winter.
I received my first SS check last week...a whopping $185.00!!! Because I get a meager teacher's pension, they punish me and deduct about 60% of what I should be getting at age 62. Government offset...what a joke. Thanks to these politicians any municipal worker gets punished while the fat cats in DC can collect all their various pensions from various government jobs, military, corporate, etc.
