What response do you want your reader to have?

When you're in the process of writing, it's easy to forget that you are actually writing to someone. Whether you've thought about it consciously or not, you always write to readers or perhaps you are writing to yourself. What impression and response do you want your writing to convey to your reader?

My personal way is to commune with the reader and make him think he/she is right inside with me in my story. Traveling along with me through my characters and laughing or crying as we go along. That's what I try my darnest to do.

Hi Daffodil56!

When I write, I hope to inspire, encourage and/or lighten another's mood.
I mostly share insights and experiences with others.
I feel writing from experience has the most impact on another person because you have actually been in a situation your writing about and can connect with people on a level of truth.

I go along with Maltese's comment when writing non fiction.

When writing a novel I try, as Zoch said, to make my reader feel he/she is there.

Zoc- I have always heard that if an author can make his/her readers laugh AND cry, he/she is an author.

I'm with platform and Zoch. When writing fiction, the first response I want from the reader is emotional. If the reader cares about the main character, he/she will read on to find out what's going to happen. In order to care, the reader has to feel an emotional connection and empathize. I try to tap into a universal emotion, and I use deep point of view because it brings the reader directly inside the main character's head and he/she feels everything as the character does. The idea is for the reader to experience the story...not just read it. The subject has to be interesting to the reader, of course, and a lot of other stuff, but for me, emotion is the first response I want from the reader. I want them to be emotionally engaged. Sorry for rambling.

I agree. Being able to write fiction so that readers are emotionally caught up in your characters and what they do, is the response I hope readers get from what I write.
