which is worse

State censorship of reading material./knowledge or self censorship?

Self censorship, as where there is a will there is a way to get around state censorship. Self censorship limits you by your own control that may be flawed.

On an individual basis cardstell , I agree that self censorship is worse , but at a societal level , state censorship is far worse since it makes so much information unavailable .

While censoring oneself as to reading material or knowledge is effectively choosing ignorance it is a choice.....state censorship comes from an outside source and that choice is taken away....so the state censorship is worse, to me.

Funny you should write this thread. I am presently reading a book entitled "The Mad, Mad World of Textbook Adoption." It elaborates on the textbook adoption process and how it is largely responsible for the truly abysmal textbooks we now have for K-12.

First the states censored them for every reason imaginable, from "gender bias" to "cultural bias", etc.

Now the texbook companies censor themselves so their books will get adopted.

I know. . .I'm in teaching and modern American textbooks are wretched. . .especially literature and history.

OK. . .it's not precisely on the subject of the thread. . .so sue me.
