Term Limits

I know we're not supposed to cross post, but I'm gonna put this in all my groups.

No diatribes, please...yes or no.

Yes. 8 years a maximum for senators. 10 years a maximum for reps. What will that do? Will that change the face of government? Help me out here......For every snake that rears it's head there will be a thousand to take its' place.

What about 4 and 5 years? Would that bring honesty back into government? What does terms of tenure have anything to do with ethics of politiics?

Well, the length of the terms are set by the Constitution. 6 years for Senators and 2 years for Reps. Until the 17th Amendment was ratified, Senators were appointed by the state legislatures of the individual states.

I think setting term limits would hurt our system of government. We are encouraged to choose a career. There is nothing wrong with following a political career and we have some very good career politicians.

The want of money and allowance of special interest lobbyists to sway votes is, I believe, one of the biggest political problems we have today. That is what I see as the biggest problem in our working government.

We hear all this talk about morality but the want of money has been the bane of our existence. Worse still, is a nation of people virtually uninvolved with government proceedings – striving to appear richer (or ‘better’ compared to others) than they are - until one Election Day or another when they mindlessly vote for the politician that tells them they will be better off financially if that politician gets their vote. That is exactly what happened during the two elections that gave Mr. Bush the presidency. Mr. Bush promised tax cuts and voters gave no thought as to what damage would be done to our economy….people wanted more money to pay to the credit card and insurance companies that were allowed to bilk the public because of public greed and arrogance and, of course, the banks and insurance companies being allowed to manipulate the ‘system’ because monies spent on lobbyists to sway votes their way.

The biggest problem in our electoral process, however, is the amount of money one must have to run for a political position. That is why we only have a two party system of government. Any time people can’t run for political positions because they haven’t got enough money the major problem with our electoral process is magnified. If you want free and fair elections then the playing field for those seeking a political position needs to be a level one. Take money out of politics completely. Make media offer free and equal time to all candidates. That would be a great place to start.
