OMG, High Profile and Work

I cannot even imagine working this large, and who would buy it?

From my earlier years I have several pieces many times larger than these. The tallest is 7'! Try it, Peg, you'll like. Take the max dimensions of your kiln and make something that "just fits." Risk! It's all about risk. - M

I've never done any large mosaic work, but I'm reminded of sculptor Elsa Salfity's very nice mural, several square meters, for the St. Francis church in Salta. The design is excellent and very well set up on an outside wall with a large doorway; but Elsa's problem with the lack of a sufficiently large kiln for a single firing is evident. So, if you should decide to embark on something of this nature, it's best to first make sure your dimensions fit into an available even-temperature kiln all at one go. No two firings are identical, even in standard electric kilns!

Hello all,

I absolutely love Jason's work. I made my first set of wall tiles and sold them instantly. I am frequently asked to do kitchen backsplashes, etc. I declined, referring folks to a couple of local excellent custom tile potteries.

I have been gravitating toward decorative tile works for awhile. I am very anxious to explore them when I move South next month.

When making wall tiles, you can create huge works....in pieces....like a large puzzle. Angelica Pozo has an excellent book on tile making.

I get very consistant results when working with terra cotta. You can divide the finished piece up in sections. Borders can be fired in one batch. Field tiles in another....etc. Possibilities are endless!

I have to say I love this work! Especially the colors bold and bright! Can't imagine the prices on pieces like this, but more power to those who can sell them!

I'm excited if I can make 8x8's that don't warp LOL!

Wow what wonderful work! Wish my studio was up and working! I like making tiles, but never thought of making them that big..lots of food for thought!

Matt Jones, our local, wood fired potter makes pots(urns) that I can stand in, but I am not willing to spend that much on the clay needed to experiment. His pots, in his studio, that stand 5-6 feet tall sell for $2K, the local Blue Spiral gallery just started selling them for $4K - whatever, it's not for me.

I am not much for big pots..too heavy to lift, but doing large tile might be fun. The late Viola Frey worked in sections with her big figures.

Viola Frey was an early influence for me. I LOVE Blue Spiral Gallery!!!! I have no use for huge pots. A local woodfiring potter, Jordan Taylor makes huge pots. He sells them to commercial enterprises.

Tiles, like puzzles, can grow as big as you want....one piece at a time.

In the latest PMI there's an advert for a free handmade tile directory that may be of interest to some of you. Also an article about slumped glass tha was interesting.
