What is it Wednesday

Morning, Now here's a pretty funky looking plane! No it's not broken but that is a pretty strange looking sole!

Can you name this plane and tell me what its used for? Guess away!
Cheers; Mass

I’d guess that it’s a Stanley #340 Furring plane, either a type 1 or type 2.
It was manufactured between 1905 and 1917.
The basic patent belongs to J. Allen.
It was used to smooth uneven surfaces of sawmill cut lumber. Prior to using a smoothing plane. It will clean off dirt and grit from rough timbers similar to a scrub plane. Its straight blade is easier to sharpen then the curved blade on a scrub plane.
Type 1 has “Pat. Appl’d for” on the cutter
Type 2 has 3/3/1903 date on the cutter and “J” TM.

It is seldom used now days.
A modern version is made like a rasp.

This type of plane was also called:
Roughing plane,
Cow plane,
Hunter plane,
Scrub plane,
Scud plane, and
Scurfing plane.

Well that sort of ends this one quick! I'd say it's a pie crust trimmer! Looks like it's meant to follow the dish right around!

Massracin, do you own the pictured plane?
If you don't, but would like to, expect to pay about $1500-$2500 (1905-1910) Type 1
and $1200-$1800 for a Type 2 Avg. price.

Hi CJ, Ya killed this one off pretty quickly :^) Nope, don't own it and don't intend to either! Too specialized and too rich for my tastes.
