The Wrong Clothes?

In Matthew 22 there is a parable told by Jesus regarding a wedding feast. It starts ...“The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who arranged a marriage for his son ...” and goes on to tell how the invited guests didn't come, leaving the king to resort to inviting folks in off the street. “And the wedding hall was filled with guests.

“But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who did not have on a wedding garment. So he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless.”

In the culture of the day, weddings were very important events, and folks always wore their best clothes to show respect for each other during this prominent social occasion. Someone who was not dressed in a wedding garment was dishonoring the party-giver and all of his guests.

“Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ For many are called, but few are chosen.”

Are we at the party, eating and drinking ... but wearing the wrong clothes? Or are we showing the honor and respect due our King?

Are we literally talking about clothes? None of us can measure up as far as what WE do. It is Christ in us that makes the difference.

When I was young I worried about what I wore to church - today I don't worry. My outlook was changed by a pastor many years ago who made a remark that I have come to accept, "When God looks at one of His children who has chosen the Son as Lord and Savior, He sees only the blood of His Son. No rainment can equal that! If we are forgiven and have faith, we are worthy of the wedding feast but only because of His Mercy and Grace.

In James 2:2,3,4,5 it says "For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; 3/ And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: 4/Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and become judges of evil thoughts? 5/ Hearken, my beloved brethen, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which He hath promised to them that love Him?

In other words we cannot always tell a christian by what he wears.
I was always taught to wear my best clothes to Church, especially on Sundays. It has changed so much. You can wear anything to church, even shorts. I wear long pants, but I admit I feel uncomfortable a little, if I wear them on Sundays. Lessons learned early in life have a way of hanging around.
I think of some of the church buildings I have seen. Does God feel honored when millions of dollars are spent on a building and people in need go without?

Okay - I will admit, I never thought that this passage meant literal clothes!

Goodness! Isn't it figurative? In the parable, I think the wrong clothes represent a wrong attitude of the heart. There are people in church, partaking with true Christians, that have a wrong attitude and are not true Christians (wrong clothes) and they will be cast into hell (outer darkness).

Sorry - I wasn't trying to mislead, just to stimulate some conversation. Thanks for responding to my post, I was getting discouraged about even posting!

I only thought about clothes because when some friends were looking for a new church after they moved, one church they visited - one member met them in the parking lot and made a remark - we don't permit women who wear pants in church. And my friend was wearing a very expensive pantsuit. Wrong church! They later joined our church.

When someone is given clothes to wear to the wedding and they choose not to wear the clothes, that is both disrespectful and an unsult to the host. One day we will all be clothed in white linen - would any of us refuse to wear the clothes?

Mjoy, I didn't think you meant literal clothes, but it headed in that direction so I just followed. I totally understand that it is about attitude, but we got some very interesting posts, didn't we?
