friend Gene out of San Diego used to climb up there at Joshua Tree all the time
when he & wife came up to my cabin he would go out and climb the rocks
on my place that were similar but not at all as high.... as Joshua Tree
I wouldn't try it anymore either. Maybe once upon a time, long, long ago.
I'm wondering how that tree managed to make it! :)
Wow! I can feel the height in your photo! I learned long ago heights were not for me when I was learning to repel... and that was only off a 60' fire training tower!! Nice shot!!

Thank you! The secret to this shot is that it's an optical illusion. I mentioned rock face, but this is going up the back, not the face, which climbers do w/ ropes + etc.
Anyway, if you look at the line of rock running horizontally below Scout (with bump at the far right), this is easy to get to, just a steep walk. There is a wide dirt platform at the top of that lower section. So what looks like Scout going straight up from the ground is actually a much smaller climb: Scout is maybe 6' above the flat area, were he to slip and fall.
It's still pretty hairy to climb the top section: with my balance ruined from my stroke I can't do that top part any more. But I like the fact that Scout looks like he is perched high above the ground, when actually there is "ground" just a few feet below him.
.
You had me fooled, but it still looks pretty steep up there.
Oh, yes, Mary. It's quite steep and believe me it was scary as a father to watch Scout do this as a teenager.
I'm still going to sit back and watch.
Hey, bug44man, long time no see!
Afraid this is the last from my "Favorites" file...must find or shoot something new.
Our very good surf died out, but summer arrived on the beach today. By the end of the week it will be high 90's in L.A.
Hope yours is going well...
