First Communion

I was thinking the other day about my First Communion. I lived at the time in Ohio and we had a fairly large class making their First Communion. I can remember the white dresses all the girls wore and the white veil. Standing at the school and walking over to the church with our hands folded and pointing up to God. It was a beautiful feeling knowing that we were going to church and trying to understand about God, etc. I felt like a little bride and remember how all the boys wore dark suits and looked so handsome. It will be a memory for the rest of my life. My mother died when she was seventy one and she had kept my dress and my two sisters dresses all those years. Sadly, me dad gave them to Goodwill because he did not realize what they were. It was cute that she kept them all those years.

Too bad about the dresses. But you still have the memories.

I made my First Communion in 1946. We boys had to wear white suits with short pants and knee socks. White shoes were strongly recommended.

All of us had to purchase First Holy Communion "sets". These included a very basic missal with little pictures showing the position of the priest at the altar indicating at which part of the Mass he stood. The set also included a rosary, a scapular and a couple of medals, probably St. Christopher and the Miraculous Medal. The boys' set was in black leatherette and the girls' in white.

This was a big day. My grandparents even drove all the way from New Jersey to join the festivities.

This is a picture of me in my First Communion dress. I remember the "sets" too, the beautiful white pearl (plastic) cover on the missal. I had it for years. In my family, my clothes were always passed on to my neices. So, I never saw it again. The entire family came, it was a big deal. GG, I have my mom's First Communion photo and her brother has on the white shoes and shorts, I will try and scan it later. It is a beautiful photo....they posed them back then.

It was so innocent back then. It is too bad the world can't stay that sweet, but unfortunately, we all have to grow up and face being an adult. It seemed so magical and kinder than today. The world has surely changed. The picture is so cute and thank goodness they still dress the kids this way. My son made his first communion in the late 90's and he looked so cute in his suit. It was such a special day for us all, especially for the girls because we had to go buy the whole look, dress, veil, shoes, socks, jewelry and relatives came and sent presents. Very Special. Great memories.
