It's SUMMER!

School is finally out and I can say that I survived. This has been the most difficult and stressful year in 12 years of teaching. The students (90%) had no or very little respect for others or themselves. Apparently it was school wide as everyone was wanting to know what was going on with the kids. Hope next year will be better. I will be going to a week long workshop this summer to learn about being the AVID teacher for the sixth grade at school. Sounds interesting and hope it helps the kids. My district all ready has it in 7th - 12th and is adding 4 - 6 this coming year. I'm excited to find out what all is involved. Anyone else have AVID in their district? Let me know what you think of the program.

What does AVID stand for? Amen to it being one long stressful & DIFFICULT year! I got put on the transfer list but am scheduled to teach Science next year....CRAZY! I still want to go back to elementary. I do agree that kids (in general) do not respect themselves or others.....of course I teach teenagers.....1 of whom is now in jail for murder. And the older brother of one student just landed in jail for kicking a young woman in the head after fighting with his sister (the girl was already on the ground)...she died yesterday. Sad...real sad.
Hope you have a fantastic summer & get refreshed for the coming year!

Hi Scarlett,
I know the feeling: survival! LOL! Our school started a program on a grant then we were told since we were an empowerment school, they took it away. Our principal is gone and so far we have no idea who will replace her. 10 staff members transferred. Isn't consistency one of those tenets of a good education? I decided to take the TCI approach to teaching Social Studies. Have you ever heard of that?

Scarlett,

I feel your pain. This was my hardest year of 16 as well. Disrespect is becoming more and more the norm, sadly. I'm hoping for a better year next year; otherwise I don't know what I will do.

This group seems like it may be a good place to vent impartially, and possibly to brainstorm some solutions/ideas to deal with students in our classrooms. It sounds like your course will be interesting. I have not heard of it before now.

Enjoy summer while it lasts :)
