Let Me tell You what I have discovered. Since the computer entered My life, I had found no time to read like I used to do, without a book in My hands I felt totally naked, I did have a little over an hour back & forth to work. I rediscovered the library & the audio book section became the answer. I have "read" books I would never have bought by authors I had never heard of & found I never listen to the radio anymore. I will say though, it depends a lot on the reader of the book, but even then I have only started 1 "book" read by a total bore that I took out of My cd player as fast as I could pull over. Don't know if the idea holds any interest for You but it sure works for Me.
It would depend on the type of sci-fi that interests you. I have enjoyed Anne McCaffrey, Robert Asprin, and Orson Scott Card. Another member of our group recommended Piers Anthony. Needless to say, I'm hooked.
Like you, my father introduced me to sci-fi. He always had a book handy and never missed Star Trek. As a teacher, I introduce my students to sci-fi. I have then seen them reading Terry Brooks and Brian Jacques.
I hope this helps you some. If you come across anyone interesting, please let me know.

I like Gregory Benford because he's a scientist, so the science is "hard" in the fiction. The last I read of his was Sunborn. I reviewed it on my blog at view link , if you're interested.
