Gas Prices!!

The price of gas is going up again. Does anyone think that is going to effect entries? Are people going to wait to go to shows in the fall, when the weather cools off? I do all the tricks to save money, share a hotel with a friend and car pool. Does anyone have anymore ideas about how to save some money?

I'm the same way... I also check out shows with lower fees, some shows will even have Junior showmanship free as an extra entry.

I, for one, have stopped entering to the entire panel of judges - if I have seen, or have it on good authority, that a judge is not going to give me a fair shake, I don't feel the need to give them an entry - or, if a judge is rude and condescending in the ring, rough on puppies, etc. - when I first started out, I did not know the difference, but since I have been around a while and have seen quite a few of the same judges on a regular basis, I can pick and choose where my money goes - and, I hope the judges get the hint and quit their little political liasons, with the professional handlers especially - when you come right down to it, it is the little person, the fancy breeder starting their own puppies, registering their puppies with AKC and paying the show fees that are keeping the sport alive - Don't get me wrong, I use handlers for certain dogs who need to travel farther than I can go, my Specials, especially, but I would like the same consideration if I show up with an equal or better dog and not feel compelled to pay the handler's fees if I can present the same level of showmanship.

I know it kept me going to Asheville, NC for this weekend. I am sticking close to home for shows.

I have owner handled all but one of my dogs and that one I put both majors on. One of my breeds is bloodhounds. When I got into this sport in 2000 bhs were majority owner handled. Now we are the minority. It is a shame, because at times I KNOW I have the best dog.

Oh my this is my first time logging in - I could talk about judges for days - I am a new exhibitor, but used a pro handler to show my first (purchased) stud.

I don't think gas prices will bring down entries much. If the bad economy couldn't nothing will. Due to the state of the economy, I really don't believe gas prices will go up much further this year. Demand is too weak.

I bought a mini camping trailer - a teardrop - to tow behind my Subaru instead of staying in hotels. If I go to an overnight show, I only go to shows with showers for the campers.

I agree with RaeOwen - unless you are going just to give your dog the experience, study the judges! Going around with my old pro handler for 2 years, I learned a lot from her about the judges!

A new key for me - avoid visiting the vendors! I believe firmly in having the Right Tools for the Job; I've bought plenty of everything needed now; must not go shopping anymore!

It has affected me. Last year when prices jumped so high I had to stop showing at the end of summer, I just ran out of money. That and the combination of working for the automotive industry and being laid off 1 week out of every month. This year I am trying to find some one to carpool with. I live in southern Michigan and have a 31 ft travel trailer. I have recently been laid off indefinitly from my job and have the entire summer available but being on unemployment can't afford to go to all the shows I would love to go to. If anyone knows of some one interested in carpooling have them contact me at jennstar97@cs.com
