career dilemma

Hell to everyone:

I am happy to find such a group on the eons website. My name is Margaret. I am a research technician at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Up until now, I found it a rewarding and exciting line of work. However, things have changed. I am now 57 years old and am finding this line or work very stressful. I have an 84 year old wonderful mom who needs me more than she used to because of more frequent doctor visits. At the same time, I am engaged to be married and now have to get my house ready to put up for sale, in this current market. I also like to fit going to the gym at least 4 days/week.

My current job is beooming more stressful because NIH funding is getting more and more scarce and my boss was always a prominent and very productive scientist. I am also, unfortunately, noticing that I may be getting a little too old for this type of work and situation.

If anyone has any suggestions, that would really be great and much appreciated. I already posted my resume at a site for babyboomers looking for work.

I will check back as time allows to meet all of you and read your messages and blogs. I am glad I joined eons but this is my first chance to come back since joining in April. See you all soon.

Margaret, there seems to be a lot happening to you and all at one time. It will not be easy to find anything out in the market comprobable to what you are now getting. Is there a chance that you could keep your job but only work part time? You could be there for your mother, still have a job etc. It always comes down to what is it that you and your fiance have decided upon and what you can do to make it work as a win-win situation. If you find another full time position what will guarantee that you can be there for your mother?

Margaret,

Are you looking to work from home? Just wondering, with all the things going on you mentioned, it offers much flexibility with hours. The issue is finding what you would like to do and what would pay you enough.

Is there a way you could transfer the experience and skills you have into a home based situation?

Hi to Honini and Laurie1009:

Thank you very much for your responses and advice. A friend of mine today just gave me similar advice. She thinks I should first sell my home and also wait until after the wedding. It is a lot to take on at once. I am turning over the idea of part time work down the line also.

Working from home is so attractive but unfortunately, the work I do cannot ever be done at home. I will continue to explore other possibilites but I won't do anything rash. So I will heed all of your advice right now. Thanks again.

Marg.
