About 20 years ago, my in-laws owned a diner, a really really nice one. I worked as hostess and waitress, part time.

Everyone from the town would come there day and night, didn't matter if they drove a Mercedes-Benz to have their morning coffee or in their beat up pick-up for dinner.

I loved the friendly atmosphere of the place and everyone got to know each other very well; the regulars we would call them.

I always had to heat Polly's coffee cup before I poured her coffee or she'd say it was cold.

The "old fashioned" diner is few and far between these days. And it's a shame. They had an atmosphere about them that was truly unique. They seemed to be more popular in the midwest than they were in New York. And I still maintain that there is no better food in all the world like what you could find in a diner.

In a town called Elizaville NY, they hauled an old diner to a spot where a local deli is, same owners, and the diner does very well considering it isn't on a major highway.

I had a great time with my family. It was fantastic to see my son too. He's doing just great. Did you all see your families?

If you ever find yourself in East Brunswick NJ, there are two diners on the main highway ... Route 18, exit 9 off the NJ Turnpike. Stay to the left and 4 lights down on the right to see the Colonial Diner. Further down ... The Seville Diner on the right, just past the Mall. Good food and friendly service 24/7!!!

I'm glad you had fun with your family, Mary. We didn't do anything special; my son and I tinkered in the yard and garden, and his girlfriend had to work. We had a lot of rain off and on today anyway, so it would have been a crummy day to do things outdoors. Ten days til my guest from Wisconsin arrives, so then things will get hectic. She has never been to DC, so we have 5 days to fit all kinds of sight-seeing into. Probably do DC in one day, Mt. Vernon in another, and I want to spend some time in Fredericksburg, and then take a little exploration trip down towards the Bay. There's a restaurant on the Potomac where you sit with your feet in the sand and eat the best seafood you'll ever eat. Gotta do that.
I know about the atmosphere you mentioned in your little diner. It was a similar thing in my little old truckstop. People had been coming there for years. Customers were almost like family. Food was good, too. You know, we tore that one down, and built a nice new fancy one.....and it was never the same. That old feeling of coziness was gone.

John: I've eaten at quite a few diners in Jersey, Don't think I've been to those though.

@usmcma You know what I remember most? They were just as excited to see you there as you were to see them come in. I had my favorties and couldn't wait to see them.
