Falling

My aunt has been diagnosed with late stage Alzheimers. She keeps forgetting she can't walk. She broke her hip and legs in four places and keeps getting up trying to walk and falls. The nursing care center is not allowed to restrain her, just put an alarm on her. She is really going to hurt herself (also falling out of bed forgetting she can't get up).

Any suggestions?

This sounds oh so familiar as you already know, Vicki. Sometimes I think the 'no restraints' law passed years ago has hurt the individual more. Can they lower her bed to about two feet off the floor, and put mats on each side of the bed? I saw this years ago at a nursing home and thought it a wonderful idea.

God bless,
Rose

I wish I knew what could be done. That's awful!

They have lowered her bed and put the mats down. The wheelchair is wherre she falls from the most. Yes, Rose, I think the family should be able to sign for restraints. She has already hurt herself very badly and the surgery to correct the broken bones sent her deeper into dementia.

Geez!

Vicki, you read my book, 'Just a Word' did you not see where I yelled to put something in front of the wheelchair, after Carol broke her hip? Finally, they put something called a 'Lap Buddy' on the chair. A piece of hard foam, covered in plastic, fits in between the arms. Works also as a tray. Ask and see if they have this. They whould.
God bless,
Rose

I will send this to my cousin and have her ask if her mom can be put
in one. Thanks for reminding me.
