Car Rides &/or Car Trips~~~~

Do you remember years ago, when a car ride was the entertainment for the family? Let's talk about car rides back when, and today. Do you still take car rides?

I remember those rides fondly. Back when I was a child in the 50's women were automatically failed on their first driver's test, at least where I live. You know those "women drivers." I remember when I was about three years old standing on the floor between the front seats with my hands on the dashboard. I was on my way to a hospital to get my tonsils taken out. I had a brand new coloring book with a new pack of crayons. When it was over, I remember standing at a window watching my parents get out of their car coming to get me to go home. Odd how some things stick in your memory while others are lost in the mist of time.

Seatbelts and carseats were unheard of back then. Now it amazes me to think we were so thoughtless, but I guess maybe the risks were lower because there were fewer vehicles on the road back then.

We had many "Sunday afternoon drives" just to watch things going by, it was sort of a bonding experience. I even did that with my kids when they were small. We drove the logging roads and we'd see all kinds of things. I shake my head somewhat sadly when I see commercials for vans that have built-in television sets to keep the kids occupied during long trips. I can understand why parents buy them though, no more fighting kids, no more boredom to drive the kids crazy. My son saw drives as an opportunity to pester his sister close up and continuously. However, that just seems to take something out of the shared joy of just watching things go by and talking about them. It's usually the adventure that sticks in people's minds not necessarily the getting there.

Had some beautiful drives last week & week before when my friend was here from Georgia. Love driving around in the fall since it is so beautiful here. Car trips, yes but seldom just going for a drive.

My husband and I always go for a Sat. or Sun. ride. It's one of the things we have in common. The Joy of Traveling.

Wen we were kids, my grandparents always took us for rides on Sundays. There was always a treat at the end!
Today we take car trips to Kentucky (from PA) to visit our daughter, her husband and our 5 year old granddaughter. Sometimes on the way back we go out of the way to see something. We went to see Frank Lloyd Wright's house in western PA last time. It was beautiful.

Oh, I have not been to that part - - - yet- - -. It is a good thing that women are allowed to pass drivers exams now. I would not be able to live here without transportation.

A friend of mine was kind of low this week (anniversary of her husband's death) so I took her out to lunch today (after a school program rehearsal) and then, we drove out to Leadmine, the Mennonite community about 20 miles east of us. It is a beautiful area and we picked up a few things at the market and bakery. We have had so many rainy days, I wanted to take advantage of a pretty one for "both of us".

Hi. I don't really remember car rides as a youth. But today, when I get a little bored, I just go out & drive all over the town I live in. And then sometimes a little out of the way rides. I would love to be able to ride in one of those old time jollopies!
cheers
