DHEA

Several weeks ago I attended a lecture given by an OB-Gyn. He stressed the importance of hormones especially for women. He wasn't just talking about estrogen either. I found the supplement DHEA that he also mentioned and was wondering if anyone in this group has ever taken it. I did a little research on it and found it to be a bit controversial. Any thoughts on this?

Forgot to mention the doctor was stressing hormones for "older" women as well as the DHEA.

I would not take that or any other hormone, but that's me. I think it's playing Russian Roulette unless you have discussed it with your own Doctor. You could have some kind of reaction with other things you are taking. At the very least, ask your personal pharmacist about it.

I have taken a low dose of DHEA for years with no problems but the only medication I have to take is for low thyroid. I have to have my blood tested every 6 months for my thyroid and no blood problems. They always test a lot of other things when they take my blood for that test too. Heart is healthy, etc. I haven't experienced any of the female problems that I hear a lot of women having either.I don't take any other hormones. I'm not recommending it, I'm just saying that it hasn't caused me any problems.

I used to take a low dose daily when I was lifting weights everyday, but I ran out & never bought any more. I never suffered any ill-effects, but I'm not sure I would take it any more.

With something like this, not even knowing the source, one could get a lot more grief than benefits...

I've taken it, but never noticed any benefit or problems. So I'm not taking it anymore.

Your body naturally slows down production of these hormones as you age. This is part of natural design. Unless there were a very good reason for taking it, I'd think about it.

There are quality of life issues that can be addressed with the proper approach to hormone replacement therapy. The trick is to find a Doctor who is skilled enough to test you properly and get it right.

Personally, I had a bad experience with a Doctor who decided to experiment on me.

This is not a subject to be experimenting with....either alone or with a foolish Doctor.
