DNA

Has anyone done anything with DNA? I have a friend who is descended from William Brewster (as am I) and someone online asked for his DNA for a reason I can't remember. He was a little reluctant, not wanting to have his DNA hanging out there in public, but he finally did submit it. It might have been easier for him to do because he's a doctor. The results came back and they found that he is indeed descended from Wm Brewster, or related to this other person. Or something. I'm not being very clear, I think. I'm still not sure why you would want to do that.

Funny thing is, this guy is something like a 17th cousin to me and we look related. Has anyone ever heard of "The Brewster Grin?" We both have it and so do all of my family.

I don't know much about DNA, but the Howes Family Association is working on it. The Howes's are another old New England family that has been around since the 1630's. They are trying to use it to prove where in England the first Howes in America came from. I have never heard of the "Brewster Grin". Do you have a better picture or description? I am related to William several times over.

Many of the family trees are asking people to submit for DNA testing. It has taken on a like of it's own.

The Brewster Grin is a wide grin with a closed mouth, no teeth showing. Here's a picture of my granddaughter wearing it. I am also related to William several times over. I think we're cousins!!
By the way, I have Howes in my tree, too.

What a cutie! I'll have to check out family pictures. It sure sounds like we are cousins. I am related to many Mayflower and Winthrop Fleet passengers. Most of which stayed in New England and intermarried. Since I started genealogy, I have found that my husband and I are cousins quite a few times and my daughter and her husband are also cousins. I think we talked about this quite awhile ago, but if you want PM me and we can see if we can find a closer connection than William Brewster.

I will do. I found the same kinds of relationships with my mother and father and she was from Massachusetts and he was from Texas!

I would love to get my DNA done but cant afford it. There is an open Q in my family if we are English or from the continent. The only clues are the derivations of the family name. Unfortunately, there is an English and Gaul definition. DNA would settle the Q

Does anyone know of a lowcost way to have DNA done?

Maybe you could go shoot someone and have the police do it?

Sorry, that was bad.

this link is to the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation that is creating a data base of DNA. There is no fee, however, they dont send you a personalized DNA "Tree" the way the others do. I sent them a sample over a year ago and I havent found out anything useful. However, they are building the data base, maybe if others in your 'DNA' family have participated you will find some useful info. view link

i should also mention the info is hard to decipher but may give you what you're looking for. as i said above, i would like to know when my ancestors came to England, in the past couple hundred years or 10,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age. This site wont answer those type questions. still, it is free to participate.
