Equestrian Statue

Remember when someone on here posted a picture of the bronze equestrian statue by Leonardo? Today on our local PBS, was watching Rick Steves tour of Milan and there was the statue. Beautiful!

In his book, Baudolino, Umberto Eco has his main character telling of the sacking of "Byzantium" during the Roman-Persian wars, and gives a description of the people pulling down these great statues where the head was the size of a great animal.

Marti, the four horse statues that were taken from Constantinople (which used to be called "New Rome") ended up adoring the St Mark basilica in Venice and became part of the symbolism of Venice.
To the Venicians it was a symbol of their triumph over their rivals the Byzantines. This rivalry was purely based on commerce and money unlike the other rivalry between the Eastern and Western branches of the Roman Empire.
St Mark basilica is built in the Byzantine style with domes and mosaics
