The Other Side of the Story

Dachshunds Attach Pit Bulls and Girl
Reported by: Don Germaise, ABC Action News, 3/31/09

BROOKSVILLE, FL -- It ain't the size of the dog in the fight. It's the size of the fight in the dog. Just ask the ten year old Brooksville girl who was walking her two pit bulls Monday.

According to a Hernando County Sheriff's report, the unnamed child was walking her friend's two pit bulls when three dachshunds escaped from their home and charged the big dogs. The sheriff's report says, "The one dachshund nipped (the girl's) right leg in the back right above the ankle. (The girl) stated that the pit bulls did nothing but look at the three dachshunds."

The girl was not seriously hurt. Just a scratch, according to the report.

The dachshunds' owner, Chris Crawford, came to the rescue and made sure the little girl was alright. He may also have been trying to prevent his pooches from making the pit bulls angry.

Deputies were called to make sure the three attack dachshunds named Speckles, Peanuts and Pupperoo had their shots. No criminal charges were filed.

Quite honestly, I can see TQ doing the same thing, he wouldn't know the difference between a pit bull and a mouse. The other night after walking him, I was at my front door and leaned over to unhook his leash (he normally trots inside the house). Instead, he took off barking for the sidewalk, right up to a man walking his little chihuahua. Thank goodness the man was nice about it, but I think it was only because TQ is so little ~ if he was any bigger, I would understand if the man was upset. It wouldn't have mattered if it was a Great Dane, TQ still would have charged at it.

Good grief. . .My sister in law is scared to death of Doxies, not because of mine but she's had some problems with others. There seems to be something about her they don't like! She calls them little ankle biters. At least Chris Crawford, the owner, sounds like he was being responsible for Speckles, Peanuts and Pupperoo!

I had to laugh at this story. When I was a kid, we had a dachshund that would charge any big dog. The bigger the dog, the better she liked it. And the funny thing is that most of them would run from her. My son always said that its a good thing that dachshunds are small dogs because they'd be dangerous if they were big. My brother's dachshund, Oscar, charged and bit a bike rider on their road. He is such a low keyed dog, I couldn't believe it.

Speckles, Peanuts, and Pupperoo! Now there's a vicious sounding group! lol! I'm sorry the little girl got nipped, though. It's stories like this that can give dogs a bad name. (I'm still laughing)

42 Doxie teeth can make an impression on one and they tend to get you in the achilles tendon and hang on. After hearing all the bad press on pits and doxies (and some of it just makes you sick.) the first reaction is sure .. Speckles, Peanuts and Pupperoo probably have tangled with this kid before or with bully dogs, but it all goes to show. Our companion animals of any ilk have some secrets from us. We forget our little cuties were meant to go into burrows (enclosed earthen tunnels) after badgers. And I would rather take on a coiled rattler than a badger. The badgers I have met have been foul tempered, short fused and absolutely unable to back down, I slowed for one to cross the road ahead of me and the psycho turned in the road and charged the car, bit at the tire. I think this is what he did. I just heard a thud and this horrible snarling. I stopped after a few feet and looked back-- he was picking up speed coming my way. I resumed highway speed in my big ol' gas guzzling SUV. The only way you could handle something like that in the confines of a tunnel their size would be doxie moxie and determination and all 42 teeth.

One day Kaiser spotted a pit bull on our front yard with a boxer and a hound in tow. Incensed that these dogs dared to sniff his grass, he chased them down the street. I went flying after them, thinking that Kaiser would pick a mismatched fight with the pit. When I got to the point where they stopped, Kaiser was keeping up a fierce offensive, but the bigger dogs were standing there looking at him like "What?"
