Italy

My daughter and I spent two weeks in Italy in Feb. 2006 and loved it, even though I got pick-pocketed on a Rome subway about the 3rd day there. Rome is definitely a walk-about city although we did take the subway occasionally. The Big Red Buses are a great way to get an overview.

We rented an apartment in Florence for a week and again, walked throughout the city and also went for a Big Red Bus ride there. On the way to Florence we stopped overnight at Orvieto, which turned out to be our very favorite town. From Florence we took trains or buses to Sienna, Cortona and Pisa (we weren't going to go to Pisa because EVERYONE goes there), but it was a very convenient trip by bus - and we loved it.

I am also planning to visit Italy in near future. Can you tell me about the famous monuments over there to be visited?

Hi Everyone,

It's been awhile since I've posted here. I was clearing off my camera yesterday (making room for our mexican riera cruize) and came across some of my Italy pictures!!

My absolutely, by far, without a doubt favorite city was Vernazza. It is one of the 5 small towns that make up the Cinque Terra area of the Italian rivierra. These town are litterally built on the cliffs overlooking a small harbor.

I think it's a ?state park? so building isn't allowed. They are all tiny colorfull tiny homes built up the cliff faces, lots of old stairways. Each doorway is distinct, it's their way of expressing themselves, since they don't have gardens.

The people that live there are mostly older fisherman. The atmosphere is heavenly. We were lucky enough to have a tiny apartment there in Vernazza for a week to use as our home base, as we checked out the area. Many, if not all of the 5 tiny towns are connected by easy trails. Above the trails every inch is used, many planted with grapes and a bit larger homes.

You can also get some sort of a boat and travel the coast and look back at the towns.........the crashing waves of very white foam, the turquise seas, and the orangish, red, and golden homes are a treat for your sences!

The early mornings are a delight. The fisherment prepare their nets, and boats, you can sip a cappachino and a crosant, sit in the quite, watch the priest of the local church readying for the delightful day to come!

My biggest goal in life is to find a way to rent a tiny appartment there for at least 6 months of the year in retirement!! This is what keeps me working in my business..........money for Vernazze, by the way, would anyone like a fantastic natural wax candle....or some information about a fun, stress free home business!!! :P

believe in your dreams,

I loved Florence too. I was there in 2005 with a friend who had never traveled out of the country too.
We didn't rent an apartment but stayed in hostels and hotels. it was a great experience! Two women traveling alone... it was fun.
I would love to go back and see other parts of Italy...maybe take a cooking and painting class.
