Blend Tool

"This tool fills the selected area with a gradient blend of the foreground and background colors by default, but there are many options. To make a blend, drag the cursor in the direction you want the gradient to go, and release the mouse button when you feel you have the right position and size of your blend. The softness of the blend depends on how far you drag the cursor. The shorter the drag distance, the sharper it will be.

There are an astonishing number of things you can do with this tool, and the possibilities may seem a bit overwhelming at first. The two most important options you have are the Gradient and the Shape. Clicking the Gradient button in the tool options brings up a Gradient Select window, allowing you to choose from among a variety of gradients supplied with GIMP; you can also construct and save custom gradients."
I think this is one of the most fun tools to use and I am looking forward to learning more about it ~gJ

Gimp Documentation
Gimp included a lot more deatils in their documentation for this tool compared to most of the tools we have researched. I have include some of the dialog references that was in the Blend Tool documentation below.

I think we will have some fun and spend a lot of time with this tool. Hopefully I can find some good videos or web page tutorials.

Make a Smiley using gradient - blend tool.
Tis simple but makes good use of the belnd/gradient tool and is good practice for the beginner. If you scroll the iframe to the right a bit you can get all of the text in the frame for easy reading.
PS:The frame loads slowly so there may not be any text for a moment or two.

A simple blending tool tutorial.
Besides showing the use of the blending tool the author shows some tips with the select function.

The Gimp Selection Tool and Gradiant Tool video tutorial above will give you some practice with both of those tools. It also gave me my first experience with the "Rounded Rectangle" and "Border" options in the main menu "Select".
